A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.

It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a current administration.

“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.

The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.

“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”

Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
