Cameroon Political Opposition Figure to Face Legal Action Concerning Post-Election Violence, Government Says

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he provoked "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

At least four demonstrators have been killed during clashes between security forces and opposition supporters since the electoral process on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he won the election, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by security personnel on protesters have alarmed the world leaders, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union demanding caution.

Minister's Allegations

On Tuesday, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he referred to as "unlawful" protests leading to the deaths, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the election.

He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates involved in an rebellious scheme" will also face legal action.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the world's oldest head of state, secured the October 12 election with over half of the vote, compared to just over a third for Tchiroma Bakary, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Leader's Stance

The opposition figure is has not yet commented to the official announcement to try him, but he had before announced that he rejected a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

On election result day, he reported that armed men opened fire on demonstrators present near his residence in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 civilians.

Investigation Revealed

Recently, the government official disclosed that an inquiry would be initiated into clashes before and after the publication of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he stated, without giving a specific number of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the clashes.

The minister further mentioned that a number of officers of the security forces also suffered significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

While the interior minister asserted the state of affairs nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in certain regions of the country, especially in urban centers, where protesters established obstructions on Tuesday, and ignited tyres on the thoroughfares.

Analysts warn that the political turmoil could push the nation into a governmental instability.
